Short Story
EduSport Youth, a registered NPC, is launching the Vula Mdantsane Run—a 1,050 km endurance campaign from Cape Town to East London on the 1st of November . Led by Jono Kruger, the initiative aims to raise funds and awareness for the Coach in a Box programme, which creates social-impact jobs for post-school youth in Mdantsane, Eastern Cape.
Jono will run the entire distance while pulling a Coach in a Box prototype—a mobile unit carrying letters from Mdantsane children addressed to the Mayoress of East London, appealing for support and investment to scale the programme for greater impact.

Story
EduSport is a non-profit youth empowerment organisation that provides education and sport to those who need it most. Based at The Cove, Nahoon Dam, EduSport partners with schools in the Mdantsane area of the Eastern Cape to uplift communities through afternoon academic and sports academy programmes. By creating social-impact job opportunities for unemployed youth to work in schools as coaches and mentors, EduSport ensures children have access to quality education, sporting opportunities, and the chance to reach their full potential.
Coach in a Box is one of EduSport’s flagship programmes built on the belief that “every child is a champion who needs a coach.” The programme empowers communities by creating social-impact jobs for local youth, who serve as Academic (Literacy and Numeracy), Sport (Rugby and Netball), and Empowerment (Psychosocial) coaches in primary schools. Through this, children gain access to quality education, sport, and personal wellness opportunities, while young coaches gain meaningful employment and purpose.
“EVERY CHILD IS A CHAMPION. EVERY CHILD NEEDS A COACH”
In 2022, Jono Kruger ran 300 km alongside three Grade 12 students to raise R660,000 for Ubuko. The campaign aimed to fund a state-of-the-art robotic prosthetic to restore his independence and mobility. What began as a bold endurance challenge became a national story of hope, resilience, and community. Ubuko’s journey inspired thousands, proving that when purpose meets action, lives are transformed.
Now Jono is preparing for an even greater challenge…
