Short Story

I am Ross Rovelli from St John’s College in Johannesburg and I am hoping you will sponsor our water polo team for each goal we score in the upcoming Saint Andrew’s College (SAC) Shield Water Polo Tournament starting on the 25th Jan 2024 so that we can lend a hand to the Frida Hartley Shelter (FHS) for destitute women and children in Yeoville.

The FHS takes in homeless women and their children who have endured neglect, abuse, trauma and homelessness.

We could  be playing  up to 8 games over that weekend and we expect to score about 8 goals per game.

Story

FHS was started almost a century ago, in 1922, and initially catered for single mothers who suffered cultural stigma due to views at the time around unmarried pregnancy. It was entered into the registry in December 2001 as a non-profit organisation with the sole purpose of providing a safe haven where inner-city homeless women and children can be rehabilitated.

The Shelter provides a home environment where women work together on domestic chores, cleaning, and cooking while receiving training and support to seek employment and independence. On average, women and their children stay at the shelter for 3 – 6 months, with many offering part-time volunteer support, and counselling once they have left the shelter. Over 1000 women and children have been helped at Shelter.

We ensure that the ladies regain their human dignity and self-worth during their stay. We can accommodate mothers together with their children, thereby keeping the family together as a unit.
