Short Story
We are a pair of Grade 10 learners from Selborne College. We, Liam and Silindokuhle, will be picking up litter on the Nahoon beach to raise funds. We have partnered with Masinyusane and Edusport Youth, 2 non-profit organisations situated in South Africa.
All funds raised will be donated to help build a literacy centre for the illiterate.
Story
Masinyusane is a non-profit organisation that creates opportunities for children who live in poverty to get the best educational possible. They invest in high impact educational projects that help empower local communities to uplift themselves. They hire formerly unemployed community youth and provide them work in library and literacy centres that they have built in poor early childhood development centres, preschools, and primary schools. Our story:
Once we found out that 80% of grade 4 learners in South Africa are functionally illiterate, we were shocked. We figured that the best thing we could do to help raise money was to pick up litter at one of our beaches as litter makes up a massive issue today. We figured that picking up litter to raise money for illiterate children would be our best choice as we would be helping 2 causes.
