Short Story

A group of Selborne learners are starting an initiative to raise funds.

These funds will be donated to EduSport Youth to build a literacy centre in a less fortunate area. These centres will then be used to teach young learners how to read and how to understand what they are reading.

To raise funds we will be doing a long walk to try to raise awareness and gain sponsorships.

Any donations will be appreciated as they will all be contributing to our cause no matter how much money it is.

Story

When we 5 learners heard the shocking statistic that roughly 80% of all grade 4 learners in South Africa could not understand what they were reading, we knew we had to do something about it. When the Sports for Lives foundations presented us with a platform to be able to help, we hopped on board without hesitation. We took a while to decide what we were going to do to gain a large audience. We then thought of doing a long walk to try to raise funds for our cause. The reason we chose to participate in a long walk was because we knew we had to show the struggle it would be to not be able to read. Many people go through their day without being appreciative of things many aren’t privileged to have. This walk aims to show people that we must be grateful for all that we have and to make people think about how they could make an impact on society today.

We have partnered with the Sports for Lives organization to try to make our goal possible. They are a non-profit organization that creates a platform for individual and school communities to adopt a culture of generosity. Our goal is to raise over R3000 rand for this campaign, but obviously, we are hoping for much more as we want to build as many classrooms as we can.
