Story

A mixed team of 9 rowers, ALL OVER the age of 60, will attempt a new Guinness World Record indoor distance rowed on Friday and Saturday 4 & 5 August 2023. We will use 3 x Concept II indoor rowing machines for this attempt. Three team members will share a Concept II rower. Each participant will row for 30 minutes and rest for 60 minutes while another team member rows. This will continue for 24 hours and the total distance rowed by all 12 rowers will count towards the Guinness World Record. We are doing this raise funds and awareness for rhino conservation as our Eastern Cape rhinos are under attack and we believe it is not only our duty, but our privilege to help save a species.

Rhinos are what we refer to as a keystone species – this is  a species that helps define an entire ecosystem. Without the keystone species, the ecosystem would be dramatically different or cease to exist altogether, thus EVERY RHINO MATTERS. We further believe that rhinos are not only essential in the natural environment, but also in the economic environment as they are a huge driver of international tourists into South Africa.

Our beneficiary is the Community Conservation Fund Africa (CCFA), and the funds raised will go towards the Rhino Legacy Project at Nyosi Wildlife Reserve, a peri-urban reserve just outside Port Elizabeth, South Africa. The CCFA is a registered non-profit company borne to address the urgent need for community development to benefit Africa’s wild animals and wilderness areas. CCFA works at the intersection between conservation, ecotourism, and is active in educating and empowering local communities in conservation areas.

Their goal is to create a conservation legacy through projects that protect the environment and wildlife by creating sustainable partnerships with communities. CCFA is an executing mechanism that strives to ensure that communities participate in and benefit from conservation.
