This year, for the first time, a greater purpose will be added to the annual Paul Roos-Grey rivalry as these historic schools raise funds for Calling Education!
Calling Education opened its Stellenbosch doors in 2018 to provide top-quality education to low-income learners and grew to the current enrolment of 300 boys.
In 2022, a second Calling Academy (co-ed) opened in Kroonstad in the Free State.
This was made possible by Paul Roos and Grey College old boys collaborating on this remarkable vision.
Funds raised in this campaign will go towards much-needed improvements to the infrastructure at both campuses: adding classrooms, improving security measures, and providing data projectors to name a few.

Story

The challenges in South African education are well-documented. The majority of the learners in our country do not have access to the head start provided by the quality education available at schools like Paul Roos Gymnasium and Grey College. There is a massive need for solutions!
Calling Education was founded with the vision of providing top-quality education to low-income learners. Werner Cloete, previously a teacher at Paul Roos for 10 years and a former head boy of the school, drove the process in close collaboration with co-founders Dr Philip Geldenhuys (Grey College First XV 2001) and Willem Meyer (Grey College First XV 1998).
After two years of research, development and networking, Calling Academy opened its doors in 2018 with sixty learners and four staff members in a run-down farm school building. Today, there are 300 learners from more than 30 primary schools enrolled, served by 22 staff members. Several remarkable opportunities have been created for the learners, for example a trip to Oxford University in 2019 and in 2022 as part of a special collaboration with the Oxford Centre for Tutorial Teaching. Other innovations include a Future Fathers module to inspire boys to be responsible fathers one day.
Old boys of these great schools joining forces to create better opportunities for low-income learners by mobilising the current boys of the schools – what a great legacy our schools can leave!
It is believed that this campaign will help activate generosity as part of their learners’ lifestyle as they are the main drivers of the campaign.
Calling Academy’s motto is Making every effort to confirm our calling.
Thank you to the Paul Roos and Grey College communities for also making the effort to confirm the greater calling of our historic schools in South Africa.
