Short Story

Selborne College is a school where boys become men and a man can only find meaning for his existence in something outside himself. We 5 Selbornians (Yolisa Q, Luyolo S, Masibulele S, Somila Q and Sichumisele Z)have taken inspiration from this and have decided to make a difference where we can. When a boy joins the College he doesn’t just join an institution he joins a family (Brotherhood) and one of our family members UBuko Mpotulo needs our help. Our objective as a collective is to embrace the fact that we have the ability and influence to bring about change in an individual’s life. So we 5 Selbornians have taken up the gruelling challenge of cycling from East London to King Williams Town on Sunday the 21st of August 2022 in hopes of raising funds UBuko. Our goal is to raise R2000 which should bring UBuko closer to obtaining a prosthetic hand valued at around 600 thousand Rand. This prosthetic hand will allow UBuko to navigate the physical challenges of life a little easier and let him do mundane tasks that we take for granted such as being able to pick up a glass of water with one hand because at the end of the day being disabled should not mean being disqualified from having access to every aspect of life.

Sports for lives has partnered up with the Selborne College Life Orientation department under the stewardship of Mr Kruger and Mrs Hartmann to raise funds for UBuko Mpotulo fine young gentleman who embodies the ethos and the culture of what it truly means to be a Selbornian but more precociously what it means to be a human being. UBuko lost both his legs at a young age due to meningococcal septicemia this disease would leave him having both of his hands disfigured. Life Orientation a subject that embarks on moulding an individual into having characteristics that poetry the truest sense of humanity, we now 5 gentlemen have the opportunity through this program to practice what it preaches. The funds that are being raised for UBuko to obtain a prosthetic hand cost around the region of 600 thousand rands, which is an enormous figure by any stretch of the imagination but if you take into consideration the fact that you right now are able and are reading this while holding a cellphone in your hand makes the price tag a little more conceivable. We 5 Selbornians have never cycled further than within our own neighbourhoods but the challenge of helping out one of our own has inspired us to oil our chains and prepare our spokes for the gruelling challenge ahead. On the 21st of August were going to embark on a journey that will see us cycling 60kms from Selborne College to king Williams Town with the hope that every kilometre gained will be a step closer to UBuko obtaining a hand. We will start at 6 am in the morning with hopes of finishing the journey by 2 pm in the afternoon. Still, no matter how long it takes we will finish as we have put in extensive training over the course of the past 3 weeks in hopes of acclimatising our bodies for what lies ahead. We ask that you be a part of our journey and support our campaign with however much you’re willing to donate as our target is R2000. Any amount donated would be greatly appreciated and go a long way for the cause. If you would like to support us click Back Campaign.
