Running for a Cause: Vineyard Housemates Raise Over R130,000 for Childhood Cancer

The Cape Town Marathon on October 20th, 2024, was more than just a race for six university students who call Vineyard their home. It was a shared journey of resilience, solidarity, and an inspiring commitment to making a difference in the fight against childhood cancer. As the sun set on race day, the group — Matt, Flem (James), Ders (James), Ethan, Dom, and Steph — crossed the finish line together, not only as runners but as champions of a cause, having raised an incredible R130,365 for the CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation SA.

United by a Shared Mission

What brought this group together wasn’t just their shared digs at Vineyard or their casual hobbies like golf, padel, and the occasional drink. It was their collective experience of witnessing the devastating impact of cancer on loved ones. The trauma of seeing friends and family members battle this cruel disease left a lasting mark on each of them. This shared pain became the fuel for a powerful mission: to run the Cape Town Marathon and raise funds for CHOC, an organization dedicated to supporting children with cancer and their families through every stage of their journey.

The Road to the Marathon

For the Vineyard housemates, the marathon was more than a physical challenge; it was a symbol of hope. They started running together as a way to train, bond, and support one another. What began as casual runs quickly turned into something more significant, with each step representing their dedication to the children bravely facing cancer.

“We run because cancer is a battle no person, and especially no child, should face alone,” shared Matt. “Every kilometer we covered was a reminder of the strength these young fighters show every day. It pushed us to keep going, even when it got tough.”

Making an Impact: R130,365 Raised for CHOC

The support for their campaign was overwhelming, with friends, family, and even strangers rallying behind their cause. Together, the Vineyard housemates smashed their fundraising goals, bringing in an impressive R130,365 for the CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation SA. These funds will go directly towards providing essential services, emotional support, and care to children and families navigating the difficult path of childhood cancer treatment.

“Seeing the donations come in was incredibly humbling,” said Ethan. “It reminded us why we were doing this in the first place. Knowing that our efforts could bring some relief and support to these families made every bit of training worth it.”

More Than Just a Marathon

For Matt, Flem, Ders, Ethan, Dom, and Steph, this journey was about more than just completing a marathon; it was about making a meaningful impact. The experience has strengthened their friendship and given them a new perspective on what it means to give back. Their success is a testament to the power of community, the importance of standing together in the face of adversity, and the incredible difference that even a small group can make when united by a common goal.

A Heartfelt Thank You

The Vineyard housemates extend their deepest gratitude to everyone who supported their campaign — from those who donated to those who cheered them on from the sidelines. Together, they’ve shown that when a community comes together with purpose, even the biggest challenges can be met with hope and resilience.

This marathon may be over, but their journey to support children with cancer continues. “We’re not stopping here,” Dom added. “We’re committed to keeping the momentum going, finding more ways to support CHOC and the incredible work they do.”
