Story

United Through Sport is a charity working with participants from disadvantaged communities, aged 5 – 35. We are focused on using the power of sport to help children and youth on their pathway to success. We are committed to the holistic development of each our participants, focusing on their health, education and personal development. Our programs improve education outcomes, raise sexual health awareness, promote gender equality and build life-skills.

The Need

Children from disadvantaged schools in the Northern Suburbs of Nelson Mandela Bay receive very little access to any kind of structured physical activity or sports programmes. As a result they miss out on all the benefits (health, emotional well-being and life skills). Teachers and facilities are under-resourced and headmasters do not have the luxury of employing specific sports coaches to work with the children and fill the gaps that the teachers cannot provide.

The Solution

Our solution is to employ previously unemployed youth from the same communities to work in the 6 cluster
schools to deliver hockey coaching for grade 5 to grade 7 children as well as facilitate weekly 6 a side and 11 a side hockey matches between the schools. Thus creating a regular physical education and sport programme for the children to enjoy and develop from while also creating an income for unemployed youth
