Growing Hope: “The Impact of KES’s campaign on Johannesburg Children’s Homes’ Food Garden”
In 2024, King Edward VII School (KES) took a remarkable step toward sustainability and community support by launching the “Red Recovery For Lives” initiative through the Sport For Lives platform. This innovative fundraising effort saw donations made for every try scored by the first-team rugby boys during their season, helping to fund the Johannesburg Children’s Home (JCH) food garden and water tank installation.
Community Support and Involvement
The response from the KES students, parents, and coaching staff was overwhelming. Volunteers dedicated their time to working in the food garden, which not only helped alleviate the workload for JCH staff but also inspired the children to get involved. Seeing their role models in action, several children eagerly participated in gardening, fostering a sense of responsibility and community.
One of the most cherished moments of this initiative was when the JCH children were invited to the KES first-team rugby locker room for a special jersey handover ceremony before their big match against Jeppe Boys’. This experience left a lasting impact, demonstrating to the children that their dreams and aspirations are achievable with hard work and dedication.
Tangible Benefits of the Project
The installation of the water tank has been a game-changer for JCH, providing much-needed irrigation for the second food garden. With fresh produce readily available, the children have access to nutritious meals, enhancing their overall well-being. Additionally, the project ensures that even during water shortages, the gardens remain productive, promoting long-term food security.
During school holidays, JCH children actively participate in maintaining the garden, learning sustainable agricultural techniques such as the Farming God’s Way method. This hands-on approach not only educates them about food production but also instils an appreciation for self-sufficiency and sustainability.
Sustainable Growth and Future Plans
The success of this project has paved the way for a long-term partnership between KES and JCH. Plans are already in place to sustain and expand the initiative in 2025, with the introduction of herbs and additional crops chosen by the JCH kitchen chef. A year-round volunteer program also allows community members to contribute to maintaining the gardens.
A Heartfelt Thank You
JCH extends its deepest gratitude to KES, Sport For Lives, and the Life Green Group for their dedication and generosity. The impact of their efforts goes beyond the physical garden—it has inspired hope, ambition, and resilience in the hearts of the JCH children. This partnership is a shining example of how teamwork, determination, and community spirit can create lasting change.
Through sport, collaboration, and a shared vision, KES and JCH are not just growing a garden; they are cultivating a brighter future for the children they support.
