Red Recovery for Lives 2024: Changing Lives Through Rugby in Johannesburg

Sport For Lives – Red Recovery For Lives

This was rugby with a purpose—a movement to play for change and build a healthier, stronger community for the children of Johannesburg.

The King Edward School for Lives campaign was an inspiring mission that combined the power of rugby, community,  commitment and a vision to make a meaningful difference for children at the Johannesburg Children’s Home (JCH) Led by the dedicated KES community, this initiative aimed to go far beyond the field, creating a positive and lasting impact where it was needed most.

At the core of JCH, there is more than just a safe haven for children in need; there is a flourishing vegetable garden that has become essential to the home’s self-sufficiency. With hard work and care, this garden is able to provide up to 90% of the food required for the children—an impressive feat, but one that could be taken even further.

The Red Recovery for Lives campaign set out with a mission to double this vital food supply by expanding the garden’s crops and upgrading its agricultural tools and equipment. The KES community was honoured to be a part of this transformative project, knowing that their support could impact the children and the broader community in a profound way.

We are truly grateful for the opportunity to give back to the community, when we played our matches we knew we were playing for something bigger than ourselves and for this we are truly grateful. Proud KES pupil

Supporting Red Recovery for Lives meant more than supplying nutritious meals; it was about contributing to the children’s well-being while empowering them with the skills and resources to build a brighter, more self-sustained future. This campaign was a call to action to ensure that JCH continued to thrive, bringing hope and opportunity to the young lives it nurtured.

This was rugby with a purpose—a chance to play for change and to build a stronger, healthier community for the children of Johannesburg.

Sport For Lives believes that stepping into someone else’s shoes, figuratively and sometimes quite literally, should be a way of life for all.

Collectively, they have raised just over R107 000 through the Sport For Lives platform, with more donations coming in.
