Pretoria Boys High School Makes a Splash for a Cause: Swimathon Success for Lemon Tree Kids

On Saturday, 25 October 2025, the pool at Pretoria Boys High School (PBHS) was alive with movement, music, and motivation as the school community came together for its annual 12-hour Swimathon — a powerful example of what it means to be Playing for Purpose. The event brought together students, parents, teachers, and Old Boys to swim for a cause that truly matters: supporting Lemon Tree Kids, an organisation that brings hope and care to children affected by cancer.

From the first splash at 8:00 am to the final lap under the floodlights at 8:00 pm, the PBHS pool never rested. Swimmers of all ages and abilities took to the water, cheered on by classmates, families, and friends. Every stroke represented compassion in action — proof that sport can unite people and transform lives when driven by purpose.

Each group was led by a Captain and Vice Captain, who rallied their teams and inspired them to reach beyond the pool to the greater PBHS community for support. Donations flowed in from every corner — from alumni, families, and friends — as supporters pledged funds per kilometre swum or made once-off contributions to help the boys reach their ambitious fundraising goal of R350,000.

Every rand raised went directly to Lemon Tree Kids, ensuring that children fighting cancer receive the love, care, and support they deserve.

Last year, PBHS swimmers collectively achieved an incredible 604 kilometres, and this year’s participants were determined to go even further — not just in distance, but in impact. With endurance, teamwork, and sheer heart, they embodied the PBHS motto “Virtute et Labore” — by virtue and labour — showing that true strength lies not only in physical effort but in compassion and commitment.

The day was filled with moments of connection and joy — parents swimming alongside their sons, Old Boys reminiscing about their school days, and staff members leading by example. But above all, it was a day that reminded everyone what Playing for Purpose truly means: using sport as a force for good, to bring hope and healing where it’s needed most.

Every stroke mattered. Every donation made a difference. Every smile was a victory.

Sport For Lives is proud to celebrate Pretoria Boys High School for their unwavering spirit, teamwork, and generosity. Through their continued commitment to Playing for Purpose, the PBHS community has once again proven that sport isn’t just about competition — it’s about compassion, connection, and creating change that lasts far beyond the finish line.

Together, they didn’t just swim — they swam for lives.
