Running for a Cause: Abri Spies Takes on the Two Oceans Ultra Marathon for Lemon Tree Kids
On April 5th, Abri Spies laced up his running shoes and took on the grueling 56km Two Oceans Ultra Marathon—not just for the challenge, but for a purpose far greater than himself. At 53 years old, Abri is a passionate, albeit self-proclaimed slow, runner who finds his greatest motivation in running for a cause. This year, he dedicated his race to Lemon Tree Kids, a charity committed to supporting children battling osteosarcoma.
Inspired by the efforts of Pretoria Boys High and their involvement with Lemon Tree Kids, Abri set an ambitious goal: to raise R100,000 to help these young warriors in their fight against bone cancer.
A Journey of Passion and Purpose
Abri’s running journey began in 2018, sparked by what he calls a “midlife crisis turned passion.” What started as a challenge soon evolved into a mission to make a difference. In 2019, he completed his first Comrades Marathon—crossing the finish line just 16 minutes before the cutoff—while raising R80,000 to help build a school hall for a primary school. Now, he has pushed his limits once again, proving that determination and heart can go the distance.
